Safety Of Eating Tuna- by A.R.M.Y & Mooinater.
Mercury comes from air pollution. It rains down onto lakes, rivers and ocean. It could come from industrial areas and any sort of power plants. It is very unhealthy to eat tuna with a high mercury level.
The two main types of tuna is, Light (Usually Skipjack) and White. (albacore) All white tuna is albacore
LIGHT TUNA (USUALLY SKIPJACK - THE SMALLEST TUNA SPECIES) | WHITE TUNA (USUALLY ALBACORE – LARGER TUNA SPECIES) | |
---|---|---|
Amount of Mercury (parts per million) | (0.12 parts per million of mercury) | 0.32 parts per million of mercury |
Children under six (3 oz portion) | can have have three, 3 oz. per month | can eat up to one 3-ounce portion a month |
Children six-twelve (4.5-ounce portions) | once per week (4.5-ounce portions) | two 4.5-ounce portions a month |
Adults (6-8 ounce portions) | can safely eat it once a week. | can safely eat this kind of tuna up to three times a month |
- Canned light – the safer choice (0.12 parts per million of mercury).
- Remember when it comes to tuna the bigger the fish the higher level of Mercury. Look out for any labels on your can that says “Gourmet” or “Tonno.” They are made with bigger yellowfin and include mercury levels comparable to canned white.
