Harvesting methods of tuna

Fishing Method
Pole and Line
- can be operated by hand or like a winch
- method is common to sport fisheries
- also used in commercial fisheries
- the use of this method has minimal negative impact
- the recommended choice of Greenpeace

How its done:
-a group of target fish is located
-water is sprayed from the back of the fishing vessel and small bait fish (sardines) are scattered onto the surface of the water
-tuna will think that it is a live school of prey fish and be attracted
- fish is hooked and flicked up and over the head of the fisherman and onto the deck.
Fishing Method
Longline
(Considered ideal for catching Albacore, Bigeye and Yellowfin)
- fishing boats trail a long line of baited hooks
- fishing lines can be miles long, with thousands of baited hooks.
- hooks can catch non target fish like swordfish, sharks
- also may catch other marine life like sea turtles, albatrosses (birds), and dolphins
- this fishing method requires careful management or there could be a lot of bycatch
(The picture to the right shows a Bigeye thresher caught by longline.)

Fishing Method
Purse Seine
LOCATING TUNA:
-fishermen locate a free-swimming school of tuna
- may use aircraft or high-tech fish finders that locate fish underwater
-some fishermen set the net around floating objects, (e.g., logs or seaweed), or around man-made structures called fish aggregating devices or FADs.
-when FADs are used it causes greater bycatch
-sometimes a fast swimming school of dolphins is targeted to find tuna since they are known to swim together
HOW ITS DONE:
-once a large school of fish is found , a purse like net closes up (drawstring purse), capturing the fish
-fishermen pull the net on to the vessel, so they can collect their catch.
-It is an efficient way to fish for the fishermen because lots of fish are caught
-purse seining around FADs tends to scoop up more bycatch compared to free-school purse seining
-bycatch includes dolphins, turtles, sharks and immature tuna that hasn’t had a chance to reproduce as well as and other species or fish
-when fishermen use purse seines the right way – to target a tightly knit school of free-swimming tuna – it is an efficient fishing method
-but purse seines fishing can be harmful if used with fish aggregating devices or when dolphins are targeted to catch tuna
FISHING METHOD
Gillnet FISHING
- A gillnet is a wall of netting that hangs in the water
- when using gillnets their is the risk of bycatch amoung all species of fish
-research shows that sharks are very vulnerable
-turtle mortality is high because of gillnets operating in the Indian Ocean
- gillnets have minimum seabird bycatch
- the size of fish caught in the net, depends on the net mesh size
-having a large mesh size allows juvenile or small fish to escape
-fish die because the net closes on their gills and then they suffocate
