Islands of Adaptation
Through the UBC “Lets Talk Science” Program, Matthew led students on an exploration of how natural selection drives different types of adaptations.
In an activity called “Islands of Adaptation” students traveled as birds (long-beaked, sharp , bent beaked and round beaked ) from island to island gathering as much food as possible.
Students recorded and analyzed data to determine which island habitat was best for each bird.
Among other questions students were asked to propose which island would best serve as a bird sanctuary.
